The Rising Popularity of the Christian Music Festival.

Andy Robertson

Music festivals are sometimes categorised by the music genre offered or number of festival-goers in attendance. The Christian music festival is often ignored being considered somewhat different; however, the sector has seen growth in popularity not seen across the industry. What’s driving this growth and what are the implications for organisers in this unique sector.

The growth in popularity of the Christian music festival is not a global phenomenon but is primary concentrated in the United States and Europe. Once considered a small niche sector, the increase in large scale outdoor Christian music festivals is being driven by the renewed popularity of Christian music amongst younger demographics. This is a shift away from the traditional church services which were perceived as stuffy and boring, and towards contemporary music with workshops, camping, family entertainment, youth activities and community experiences.

Changing Music Presentation.
Christian music is currently one of the fastest growth areas of recorded music (according to Luminate data in 2025) in the United States with popular Christian artists reaching audiences beyond the traditional ‘church’ followers. The music is becoming more diverse covering all genres including pop, rock, hip-hop, country, EDM and gospel combining these styles with Christian themes. The wide appeal of the music is attracting more people to attend the Christian music festival for the music rather than for any specific religious beliefs.

Target Audiences.
The Christiam music festival primarily appeals to younger audiences with research suggesting that millennials now make up about 45% of festival-goers compared to 39% just a few years ago. Although subjective, it is possible that younger people are looking for experiences that provide a sense of belonging, purpose, identity, and genuine human connections. The Christian music festival provides all of this plus a focus on family, community and shared experiences which they may prefer over passive entertainment. The focus of organisers for these events is geared towards families, and they regularly offer children's entertainment, youth workshops, family camping, religious teaching and community activities, for example.

Key Differentiators from Other Music Festivals.
The drive to use online streaming platforms for Christian music that spans multiple genre types is widening the appeal removing the traditional barriers between Christian music and mainstream audiences. Artists can build followers and fans amongst a wider audience without a focus on Christian specific radio or other media channels and generates new audiences for live events. The Christian music festival organisers have developed a unique ecosystem with their own association in the United States that has 26-member festivals which collectively attracts in excess of 750,000 festival-goers annually.

Opportunities.
Just like any other sizable music festival organiser, Christian music festivals still need a vast array of services and people to make their events happen. This unique growing sector provides a significant economic benefit to contractors and local communities. Although the format of these events may differ from traditional music festivals, they do provide employment opportunities for skilled operational or organising specialists who are looking for new jobs. The Christian music festival sector is becoming less isolated from mainstream music culture with genre crossing collaborations increasing Christan music artists reach to new audiences. Although many Christian Music festival organising entities may favour certain artists, sponsors and vendors they are becoming more inclusive as the sector grows. One of the biggest challenges for many Christian music festivals is converting the increasingly larger streaming audiences to attend a live event. They are achieving this by providing more shared experiences rather than relying on passive music to attract new festival-goers for their events.

For festival organisers planning their next event using a software management platform like Festival Pro gives them all the functionality they need manage every aspect of their event logistics. The guys who are responsible for this software have been in the front line of event management for many years and the features are built from that experience and are performance artists themselves. The Festival Pro platform is easy to use and has comprehensive features with specific modules for managing artists, contractors, venues/stages, vendors, volunteers, sponsors, guestlists, ticketing, site planning, cashless payments and contactless ordering.
