The Prevalence of Alcohol Poisoning at Music Festivals.

Andy Robertson

Some research has indicated that the number of cases of alcohol poisoning occurring at music festivals is still prevalent and continues to be a concern. What causes alcohol poisoning and what measures can music festival organisers put in place to reduce incidents, and the risks associated with severe cases.

Whilst incidents of alcohol poisoning do not represent a significant number of medical emergencies at a music festival some studies have indicated a rising trend. In order to address health risk concerns organisers can put in place effective initiatives that include festival-goer education and the creation of safe environments with comprehensive medical support services.

What is Alcohol poisoning.
The major cause of alcohol poisoning is when too much alcohol is drunk in a very short period of time and can be a serious and potentially fatal condition. It can affect breathing, heart rate and body temperature regulation. A music festival environment can exacerbate the condition due to delayed medical assistance in crowded areas combined with peer pressure to continue drinking, Festival-goers demonstrating symptoms are often ignored by others who may assume that an individual is merely drunk.

Increasing Prevalence.
A study in 2024 by Monash University in Australia revealed that drug related fatalities reported between 2000 and 2019 showed that 47% had high levels of alcohol which when combined with MDMA amplifies severe health complications. A report by The Guardian in 2024 reported that extreme heat (37°C) at some festivals led to severe dehydration and heatstroke among festival-goers exacerbating the effects of alcohol consumption and resulting in increased medical emergencies. A study published in Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy observed that there continues to be significant alcohol intoxication among festival-goers often leading to security and health issues.

Health Risks and Indicators.
There can be serious health and safety concerns related to excessive alcohol consumption at music festivals which may include heatstroke, collapsing, unsafe sex and violence putting a strain on medical services and security personnel. Identifying the symptoms of alcohol poisoning are essential for timely treatment by on-site medical teams. Typical symptoms may include any or all of the following: confusion, repeated vomiting, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, low body temperature and in extreme cases unconsciousness.

Preventative Measures for Organisers.
Festival organisers can take preventative measures to reduce the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption during their events. Appropriate training of staff and volunteers with medical experts can help them to understand and identify the indicators of alcohol poisoning along with the processes and procedures for treatment. Organisers can implement an awareness and education programme to inform festival-goers about the dangers of excessive drinking particularly when combined with illegal substances. An awareness campaign can include notices on their social media channels, the festival App and on-site signage. To manage and reduce excessive drinking by festival-goers organisers can introduce polices to enforce responsible drinking in partnership with beverage vendors for example. Festival organisers always have contracted medical services installed on a site and they should coordinate with their medical staff to ensure that they are sufficiently prepared for alcohol related emergencies during the event.

For festival organisers planning their next events using a software management platform like Festival Pro gives them all the functionality they need manage every aspect of their event logistics. The guys who are responsible for this software have been in the front line of event management for many years and the features are built from that experience and are performance artists themselves. The Festival Pro platform is easy to use and has comprehensive features with specific modules for managing artists, contractors, venues/stages, vendors, volunteers, sponsors, guestlists, ticketing, site planning, cashless payments and contactless ordering.
