Music Festival Destinations: Spain.

Andy Robertson

With great summer weather and a welcoming culture Spain is a fantastic destination for fans of music festivals. With almost 900 festivals to choose from there is a wide and varied choice of events to attend throughout the year but which are the most notable music festivals that will take place in 2021?

It’s always difficult to categorise festivals, particularly in Spain where a large number of festivals tend to focus more on traditional and cultural themes for particular regions and may be centred around Spanish food and dance for example. Data from Statista suggests that the number of festivals in Spain has increased from 551 in 2005 to 896 in 2019. From this vast choice there are probably about 20 significant music festivals worth considering. Here is the current selection of the best music festivals scheduled to take place this year.

The Big Ones.
There are two significantly sized music festivals in Spain both scheduled for July and typically attracting in excess of 50,000 visitors.

BBF: Barcelona Beach Festival.
Obviously taking place in Barcelona this is one of Europe’s largest Electronic Dance festivals. It’s scheduled to place on Saturday 3rd July 2021 and currently tickets are still available.

FIB: Festival Internacional de Benicàssim.
Benicassim is in the Valencian Community (an autonomous community of Spain). It focuses mainly on Pop music, Dance music, Indie rock, Indie pop and Electro. Scheduled to take place on 13th - 18th July 2021, despite the date announcement there are no artists confirmed or news of when tickets will go on sale.

The Large Ones.
There are five popular music festivals that attract between 25,000 and 50,000 visitors that are also worth exploring taking place in 2021:

Mad Cool Festival.
One of Madrid's go to events this festival features Pop, Rock and Indie performers and is spread over four days 7th - 10th July 2021. They expect to have over 130 artists confirmed in time for the event and tickets are on sale now.

Bilbao BBK Live.
Situated in the northern Spanish province of Biscay (in the Basque Country) this festival is scheduled to run on 8th - 10th July 2021 and features Rock, Pop, Alternative rock, Hard rock, Indie and Electronic genres. Tickets are currently on sale.

Cruilla Barcelona.
Taking place in Argualnuby this is Barcelona’s second largest music festival and features mixed genres of Ska, Pop, Hip-hop, Reggae, Folk, Rock, World music, Electronic and American rock. The festival is due to run on 8th - 10th July 2021 and tickets are still on sale.

Arenal Sound.
Situated on the El Arenal beach in the town of Burriana (in the Castellón province, a municipality of the city of Borianna) the music festival is scheduled to run on 27th July - 1st August 2021. Tickets are still available and artists come from mixed genres include Indie rock, Indie pop  Indietronics, Indie and Hip hop.

Monegros Desert Festival.
Taking place in Fraga the festival is situated in a semidesert area of Aragón, northeastern Spain. This year's event will be limited to just one day on 31st July 2021. It attracts fans of Techno, Electro, Drum and bass and Hip-hop.

Currently most of these popular festivals are scheduled for July 2021 and anyone planning on attending should carefully check potential travel restrictions and likely infection prevention protocols in place including rapid COVID-19 tests and the possibility of mandatory vaccine passports. For those that make it to one of these Spanish music festivals they will surely have a great time.

For any event organiser planning their music festival using a software management platform like
Festival Pro gives them all the functionality they need manage every aspect of their festival logistics. The guys who are responsible for this software have been in the front line of event management for many years and the features are built from that experience and are performance artists themselves. The Festival Pro platform is easy to use and has comprehensive features with specific modules for managing artists, contractors, venues/stages, vendors, volunteers, sponsors guestlists and ticketing.
