Organising an Amateur Golf Tournament Event.

Andy Robertson

As most events are organised using the same principles it is no different organising a small golf tournament. Perhaps it’s a golf tournament in conjunction with a local charity or a corporate event. These small-scale events are for local amateur players, not professionals playing in well know recognised tournaments.

Setting up and running a localised amateur golf tournament can have many facets and the organising skills for any event still apply. Whether it's a charity event or a corporate golf day for a company's key customers and suppliers there is no reason you cannot do this competently and successfully. However, if you don’t have the time there are numerous companies that specialise in organising golf events on your behalf. Obviously, there would be a cost to this but then you can be safe in the knowledge that you have an experienced organiser and that it's going to save you a lot of time.

If you decide to organise the event yourself firstly decide on a convenient venue considering what facilities are available. Aside from a golf course that is attractive to a wide audience and in a convenient location ensure that the costs fit your budget. In essence you are taking over a golf course that would normally be open to a fee-paying public.

Aside from the sporting angle key to choosing a venue will be the F&B facilities, somewhere that has the capacity to accommodate your guests and allows for presentations and speeches etc. Also consider overnight accommodation availability if your event spans several days. For a golf tournament there are recognised formats that usually involve teams competing against one another with men and women playing in different teams. A popular format is the ‘scramble’ or ‘four ball’ that ensures all players participate and feel included in the overall competition irrespective of their ability.

You can still gain funding from sponsors for such a small sporting event and this might include sporting goods suppliers and local restaurants and bars for example. In addition, there will be branding and give away gift opportunities throughout such an event. Players can be given freebies on arrival and sponsors can give away branded balls or sponsor mini competitions with prizes and awards for; 'nearest the hole', 'hole in one' or overall lowest score. As with almost any event alcohol suppliers are always attracted to such events.

Your ticketing will operate in the same way that any other event operates. Advertising by social media, email invitations and having an online website can all generate ticket sales. As with all ticket marketing offer early bird and quantity discounts.

Charity fundraising is quite often the reason for running such an event so as part of any vendor or sponsor packages you sell include products and services that are gifted to the tournament for auction at the after-event dinner for example.
