Master the Artist’s Bio for Live Music Events.

Andy Robertson

A key consideration for the success of any performance artist is how they promote and market themselves to a wider audience. An essential part of this process is having a professional biography package of materials and having these at hand and available immediately on demand is essential.

Ask any event organiser or artist liaison manager involved in a large sale live music event or festival what one of their persistent gripes is and it is the time it takes to compile the artist advance. The artist advance is quite straightforward to complete and can done quickly in most cases but the key element that always takes too long is adding the artist’s bio information and associated media. They may be supplied by either the artist themselves or their agent or manager. Artists and their management team should ensure that the bio information is up to date and immediately available for distribution but what are the key elements of the bio package that artists should compile?

Description and Summary.
A short précis on the artist’s career history along with performance and material achievements plus the artist’s genre and influences. Produce various versions to account for limitations on space, so typically 50, 100 and 250 word versions should be made available for example. The description should generally be written from a third person perspective and where possible add in any positive media quotes.

Photography.
Invest in getting good professionally produced studio pictures and consider employing a makeup artist to enhance the visual effect. A good selection of different photographs of the artist should be made available along with options for different formats and sizes.

Media Samples.
For musicians ensure that a good quality library of material is available on one or more of the following popular channels: iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, SoundCloud and YouTube. Also explore new Apps and channels as this space is constantly evolving.

Social Media.
Ensure that the artist has a presence on the usual social media platforms and include the links to each along with any relevant contact information.

If the event is a music festival then the organisers could be dealing with hundreds of artists and the last thing they want to be chasing an artist or agent for is their bio information. As soon as an agreement is signed the artist bio should be submitted to the event organisers. The artist bio is used by the press and media interested in the event as well as the organisers in marketing the event. Of course potential event goers also want to know more about who will be performing.

Using an events software management platform like
FestivalPro live music event organisers get all the functionality they need to manage artists. The guys who are responsible for this software have been in the front line of event management for many years and the features are built from that experience and are performance artists themselves. The FestivalPro platform is easy to use and has comprehensive features for managing artists with specific modules for artist management including the advancing that includes the artist bio and associated media. Organisers can quickly see at a glance which artists have submitted their bios and which have not. All artist’s bio material is stored in one centrally controlled database with secure access allocated to specific roles.
